Cervical Myelopathy

Overview

Cervical Myelopathy

Cervical myelopathy can be insidious although it is often associated with neck pain it is often missed due to its slow and gradual progression as far as loss of balance and loss of fine motor dexterity in the hands. This condition needs to be treated early on before the progression of the disease can lead to inability to walk and complete loss of function of the upper and lower extremities. Dr. Guirgues and his team will evaluate you and discuss treatment options to keep this condition from progressing.

What is Cervical Myelopathy?

Cervical myelopathy is a progressive spinal cord disorder that occurs when the spinal cord is compressed in the cervical spine (neck region). This condition affects the spinal cord itself, not just the nerve roots, and can lead to permanent neurological damage if untreated.

Causes

Cervical Myelopathy can happen for a number of reasons, including:

  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD)
  • Cervical spondylosis (age-related wear and tear)
  • Herniated disc pressing on the spinal cord
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
  • Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL)
  • Trauma, tumors, or infections (less common)

Symptoms

Because it affects the spinal cord, symptoms may appear gradually or suddenly, and often include:

  • Neck and arm symptoms
  • Leg and gait symptoms
  • Fine motor skill loss
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction (in advanced cases)

Treatment Options

If you have cervical myelopathy, we recommend a program of conservative treatments, to begin with.

Your treatment program could consist of therapies such as:

  • Pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections

Surgery Options

For many people who have cervical myelopathy, these non-surgical approaches are highly successful in relieving their symptoms. If you’re not finding the benefit of conservative methods after several months, we are happy to go over your surgical options.
