What is SI Joint Pain?

SI joint pain refers to discomfort originating from the sacroiliac (SI) joint, which connects the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine) to the ilium (part of the pelvis). There are two SI joints, one on each side of your lower back.

Causes

SI joint pain can happen for a number of reasons, including:

  • Trauma or injury
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Arthritis
  • Previous lumbar spine surgery
  • Repetitive stress

Symptoms

  • Low back pain, typically off to one side
  • Pain in the buttock, groin, hip, or upper thigh
  • Pain worsens with standing, walking, climbing stairs, or transitioning from sitting to standing
  • Sometimes misdiagnosed as lumbar disc or sciatica pain

Treatment Options

Your treatment program could consist of therapies such as:

  • Physical therapy
  • NSAIDs or other pain medications
  • SI joint injections (steroids + anesthetic)
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • SI joint fusion surgery (if conservative treatments fail)
