Cervical Disc Replacement

Overview

Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc herniation can be the source of significant nerve root and spinal cord compression. When that is the cause of the pain in the absence of significant facet degeneration surgical intervention involves artificial disc replacement to remove the pressure on the neurological structures while maintaining range of motion of the spine. Dr. Guirgues has had significant experience performing that surgery with success and can help you get back to all your activities with minimal restrictions.

What is Cervical Disc Replacement?

Cervical artificial disc replacement (ADR) is a surgical procedure used to treat problems in the cervical spine (neck) by replacing a damaged or degenerated intervertebral disc with an artificial disc implant. The goal is to preserve motion at the affected spinal level while relieving pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.

Indications

  • Cervical radiculopathy (pinched nerve)
  • Cervical disc herniation
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Failed response to conservative treatment (e.g., meds, therapy)

Procedure Overview

  1. Incision: a small incision is made in the front of the neck.
  2. Disc removal: the damaged disc is completely removed.
  3. Decompression: bone spurs and disc fragments are cleared to relieve nerve or spinal cord pressure.
  4. Artificial disc placement: a metal-and-plastic or metal-on-metal disc prosthesis is implanted between the vertebrae.
