Microdiscectomy

Overview

Microdiscectomy

If a disc herniation is causing back and leg pain you may very well need a microdiscectomy. Dr. Ashraf Guirgues has been performing this minimally invasive surgery for over 22 years. He carries out this procedure in the outpatient setting so you can go home and begin recovery right away.

What is Microdiscectomy?

A microdiscectomy (also called microdecompression or microdiskectomy) is a minimally invasive spine surgery used to treat a herniated disc in the lumbar (lower back) spine. The goal is to relieve pressure on a spinal nerve caused by the herniated or bulging part of a disc.

When Would I Need Microdiscectomy?

A microdiscectomy is typically recommended when a person has a herniated disc in the lumbar spine (lower back) that is compressing a spinal nerve, causing significant symptoms that do not improve with conservative treatments.

Common reasons a person might need a microdiscectomy:

  • Severe sciatica
  • Persistent symptoms despite conservative care
  • Weakness or numbness
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control (cauda equina syndrome)
