Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection

Overview

Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection

When a lumbar disc herniation is causing severe nerve irritation down the leg, Dr. Ashraf Guirgues can perform a transforaminal epidural steroid injection to reduce the pain and start you on the road to recovery. He performs this procedure under anesthesia in order to get the best results and reduce the risks to the patient as well as reducing the pain and anxiety associated with a spinal injection.

What is Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection?

A transforaminal epidural steroid injection (TFESI) is a minimally invasive procedure used to deliver anti-inflammatory medication (typically a corticosteroid) directly into the nerve root canal (foramen) where spinal nerves exit the spinal column.

It’s commonly used for back or neck pain that radiates into the arms or legs due to nerve root irritation or compression β€” such as in herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or sciatica.

When Would I Need Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection?

  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Spinal tumor
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

For a great many patients, non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, medication, and activity modification resolve their back or neck pain satisfactorily. There are also options like epidural steroid injections and radiofrequency ablation for more persistent cases.
